Rivalry Rekindled

There have been many people who have seen actors portray them in film, some have been happy with the portrayal, some not so happy. Some have even felt the actors or actresses were far more attractive than they ever were.

One new film that is heading for production is unlikely to be watched by one of the key characters being portrayed.

A film is being made about the rivalry between two greats of middle distance running, Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett, and how the two went head to head at the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980.

Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe has been cast as Seb Coe, but it has not yet been announced who will play Ovett. Ovett who won the 800m in Moscow, the event that Coe was expected to win, Coe then took gold in the 1500m, with Ovett taking bronze.

For a number of years the two swapped world records and divided a nation, fans were either for Ovett, or they were for Coe.

Ovett has apparently stated he wants nothing to do with the project, which apparently plans to portray him as a bad guy in the rivalry. That being the case who can blame him.

Both were tremendous athletes and their rivalry added a spark to a great era of middle distance running. For the record Steve Ovett still holds the UK record for the two miles, which he set in 1978. That just shows the measure of his ability and achievements.
