Is it the smell of sweat and mud combined, or the smell of alcohol leaving the body via the sweat glands? Maybe it is something far more profound.

In what has to be one of the craziest marketing ploys in a long time, at the Rugby World Cup that gets under way in England tomorrow you will be able to purchase for UKL24.99 a the odour of changing rooms called Rugby Fragrance. It is described as “a sophisticated woody scent,” and contains “sparking citrus notes, spicy pink pepper and fresh peppermint settling onto a heart of jasmine, dry woods and aromatic geranium and nutmeg.”

Reading that one has to assume that it was tested on backs.

There was a rumour that the fragrance was the brainchild of former England prop Colin Smart who achieved legendary status when following a test match against France downed a bottle of aftershave. However this rumour has not been confirmed.
