Gutsy Glory?

We have criticized Perth Glory in the past for their disconnect with their fans and the marketing misfiring, but we are pleased to say that although still flawed their “No Guts, No Glory” campaign is getting closer to the mark.

The concept is an excellent one. The club is hoping to sell thousands of shirts with a Shane Smeltz face on the inside, and when the Glory scores they hope to see the fans pull the shirts over their heads. It is a superb concept, but the flaw is Perth Glory is asking the fans to buy these shirts for $10. Not a lot of money but in these hard economic times will a thousand fans shell out $10 for a gimmick?

If the $10 was going to charity there may be a stronger reason to buy a shirt. Maybe if the club wanted this to be a success then it would have been wise to have a sponsors logo on the back of the shirt, and give the shirts away.

Here is a copy of the advertisement, check it out. We have to say that we are not sure the American voiceover works and again could cause a disconnect with Australian fans. Let us know what you think.

Great pics emotion tears laughter old days new times and a song to sing at the gorund- that’s the ‘glory I love!’ Sortof Ad the Poms would do.

I can see a clip of Bobby and Mori hugging each other after scoring ( SOB!)

You all make valid points, I guess it is another example of missing the target. It is very sad. Surely you would test the ad on an audience before releasing it?

Rob, on the money looks like most things at the Glory done on the cheap. Agree with Not The Footy Show if this was to be a success they had to give away the shirts.
Why not use a recognised voice on the commentary too, the yank is dreadful.
Agree with Rob re Bernd Vas etc, as for having Jakovich it proves its just a boys club, and I mean boys! Little boys playing at being football fans and administrators etc.

I dont think it was written by a top award winning ad agency copywriter. I was one. It looks like a production house direct effort.
What it lacks is an idea. What’s the take out? Big belly yobbo’s having a good time? Dont know the rationale for a yankee accent- maybe they have watched too many old Marine war movies LOL!
Even if it had a fun connection wih the 15th years of the club – carry that thorugh have a cameo of Berndt , Vas, Mori and Bobby instead of Jakovich! At the the end of the day, It better to be right , than just clever.

Rob I agree, Glory have lost the plot and their fans. The American accent is just a no-no. Don’t they market test these things? It strikes me this is actually aimed at being a money making exercise not a promotion, and it will fail.
Very unimpressed with both adverts they have put together so far, obviously an advertising agency that knows nothing about football, probably a crony of someone in the club and done on the cheap as usual.
I would pull the shirt over my head with sheer embarrassment!

They should re stripe the audio with an aussie now- stupid why do it an american accent????? A good try but misses the mark somewhat. Female audience? alienated! The whole ad is a bit like an elephant that can piss perfectly through a keyhole. Terribly clever, but what’s the point?
