Gotta Love Australia

Up until they made the final of the Women’s Twenty20 World Cup most people were sadly oblivious to the fact that the women’s tournament was running concurrently with the men’s.

Now that Michael Clarke’s men in their first Twenty20 final were smashed by seven wickets in the male event by of all teams England, the women have taken the headlines and even had pictures of their success dominate many of the sporting websites, and good on them.

The men’s defeat in the final has been relegated well done in the news stories as if it never really happened.

Not that in our opinion Twenty20 really counts as a tournament of any worth in cricketing terms England have finally won an official major cricket tournament, and no doubt will be ecstatic. Kevin Petersen showed his dominance at the tournament, and took out the best player award. No doubt South African wish they had him now?

But this detracts from the women’s achievement, and well done to all concerned and it is great to see them step out of the shadows of their male counterparts. Special mention going to Ellyse Perry who took three New Zealand wickets and then bowled the last over. New Zealand needing 14 off the last over to win, did not manage a boundary and Australia won by three runs! Let us not forget that this young lady also plays football for the national team, and let’s hope she can bring home a World Cup medal from there in the near future.
