FIFA Fails the Environment

A Little bird told us that FIFA requested all of the countries that are bidding to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups be environmentally conscious, which is very politically correct in an age where the environment is extremely important.

The only downside is that all of the bid documents had to be lodged in hard copy.

When you take into account Australia’s Bid Book contains 760 pages and includes 20 chapters, and they have had to produce thirty leather bound copies, based on FIFA requirements, their environmental stance goes out of the window.

Add to that Australia’s Bid Book will be delivered today along with 270 Annexe folders containing all the necessary agreements from the Government, Host Cities and Stadia that back up Australia’s claim it is united and ready to host World Cup, and that the Annexes for Australia’s bids total over 84,000 pages. You can understand why willow trees weep.

However we must give credit to the FFA, their Bid Books are bound in kangaroo leather and embossed with an indigenous football pattern created by designer Ricky Drill to give an Australian feel. However more importantly the documents have been printed on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper. The Bid Book and supporting collateral has been produced with environmentally rated materials and with minimal waste.
