The Ghana Amateur Boxing Team, popularly known as the “Black Bombers” currently consists of 12 young talented boxers with ages ranging between 17 and 25 years, and within the weight range of 41kg-91kg. These boxers were selected from small privately-run under –resourced boxing clubs in Accra early this year.

The Team’s captain, Manyo Plange and two others, Habib Ahmed (75kg) and Maxwell Amponsah (91kg) are the boxers with the most experience and exposure as they participated in the All African Amateur Boxing Championship in Mauritius, where they placed 4th on the medals list and qualified for the World Amateur Boxing Championships in Milan, Italy.

The Ghanaian Team’s performance at these championships was very impressive and consequently the old team was disbanded in December last year and a new one selected to be groomed for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.

Individually, these young boxers are highly motivated, very skillful, well tutored and disciplined, and have come out of the same gyms that have produced the likes of Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey, and Joshua Clottey. The come from Bukom in the centre of the city of Accra, where boxing is an integral part of the local culture. The only weakness in the team is that they lack international exposure and experience. In spite of this perceived weakness the team has great potential and given the right training regimen can achieve the ultimate.
