Azumah Nelson retired from Boxing in 1998 and in 2008 set up the Azumah Nelson Foundation in Ghana.

The Foundation is aimed at providing social services to the poor and needy through the use of sports and education. It will also provide vocational training to the disadvantaged in society.

According to Nelson “The project will also serve as a youth leadership training centre to help the youth in Ghana realize the potential that God has given them.”

The Foundation has the full support of the Ghanaian Government and together they have initiated steps to construct sports complexes for sporting disciplines, such as boxing, volleyball, table tennis and badminton in various parts of the country as part of efforts to identify and groom talents in those sporting fields; and also win that elusive Olympic medal.

Thanks to the generosity of Ghana’s mining industry, many of whom have strong links to Perth, Azumah Nelson and the Ghanaian Commonwealth Games Boxing team have been able to accept the invitation of Boxing WA to come to Perth for a pre-games training camp.
