Anyone for a Game?

This weekend will see the Perth Glory head to Carnarvon for a game against the WA State League team to raise funds for the victims of the flooding in this region.

Enough criticism has been raised about the timing of this game, and we hear that the Glory is looking at the game as ‘a bit of fun.’ The players chosen to represent the state are unlikely to have a similar view, wanting to impress the coaching staff and try and force their way into the Glory squad for next season. If taken too lightly there is a big risk of serious injury to someone. A defeat for the Glory would really be the final nail in the coffin for the club.

What is intriguing is who is in fact is going to be playing for Perth Glory. Surely having released another four players today you would not take them? With Tando Velaphi having announced he is leaving for Melbourne Victory, you would be unlikely to play him, and would hopefully give Alex Pearson a game.

If that is the case the Glory only have 13 players available and that is including Robbie Fowler who is currently in Thailand with the Chairman discussing his contract for next year; these negotiations could drag out and he could miss the game leaving them with just 12 fit and available players.

Chevron have been generous to stump up the cash to fly both teams to Carnarvon, but they may well be disappointed with the number of players that step off the plane, which will be a great shame for such a worthwhile cause.

The State team too will be without key players who will be unavailable for the state team due to the Bam Creative Night Series Finals. That being the case is this going to be an officially recognised State League team?

Once again it appears a great idea has not been thought through properly on so many levels.
